About this site
In Praise of Virtuous Service
The Republic and the Soldier is an independent publication founded in September 2026 by John T. Arant. It examines the relationship between the American Republic and those who serve it, with particular attention to military service, sacrifice, civic virtue, distinction, and the obligations that arise from service.
At its heart is a simple idea: service to the Republic has civic value. The Republic and the Soldier explores how Americans have understood that value, how the Republic has recognized it, and what honorable service asks of both the citizen who serves and the nation on whose behalf that service is rendered.
In praise of virtuous service, this publication seeks to contribute thoughtfully to the enduring conversation about citizenship, service, sacrifice, and the American Republic.

A Note to the Reader: In The Republic and the Soldier, the Republic is the United States. And while our military has many branches and many names for those who serve, “Soldier” is used here in its broadest sense, representing all who have worn the uniform in service to the Republic.
